KelsM
It has been almost four years since I discovered this forum and to date it forms part of my daily routine. Every morning, without fail, I take a quick look at the latest topics and discussions about life in Oz etc. (Don't tell my boss! ) I am not shy to admit that this forum is totally addictive Firstly, a big thank you to everyone on the forum! Even though I only registered as a member recently, I have gained so much useful advice over the past few years regarding any topic you can imagine. This wouldn't have been possible without the discussions and input from all the forum members. I could identify with many people about the frustrations in obtaining an unabridged birth certificate (my boyfriend got his in two weeks, I had to wait six months!! Lucky me!!). And then of course the re-issue of police clearances This is definitely a story on its own. Anyway, before I get too stuck in the detail, we got our PR visas in June this year!! We have done our activation trip in October (back in Jhb for now) but now we cannot get past a certain hurdle... Jobs... We are both accountants (I'm a CA) and I have applied for numerous jobs. Even had my CV redone by a professional CV writer. I was hopeful that this will make a difference but it didn't... I was told by my friend who is living in Melbourne with her family that we had to be in Australia to be taken seriously. So, two weeks before our arrival in Melbourne I started sending CV's out with our intended arrival date... Once again, silence. Not one to give up easily, I thought that we can see a few agencies once we were there. Once again, no luck. Tried contacting them and were told to email our CV's after which they will arrange a meeting. I am still waiting. I don't give up easily, but I must admit that it is sometimes hard to stay optimistic. I know it is really difficult to secure a job from South Africa, but the fact that nobody shows any interest in my CV is a worry. I will definitely post a lot more going forward and look forward to getting to know the members on the forum.
Jordy
Welcome! Four years! lol thats a long time to be a lurker. Didnt it kill you not to add in your 2 cents worth on some of the more heated topics ?All the best with the job hunt. You may need to make the horrible decision of coming over without work, and looking from this side.
Mara
Good luck with that elusive job search. Do you think it may be an idea to contact the big accounting firms directly, if you haven't done so already?

KelsM
Thanks everyone - good to be a part of the forum Jordy - I think I set a new record lol! All jokes aside, I think you are right. The only way will be to spend a few months over there and really go all out with the job hunting. Only worry is hearing from a friend of mine (who also happens to be a CA with ten years post qualification experience) who came back to SA after six months in Perth .. She couldn't find a job and eventually her family had to pack up and come back to SA. Last I heard she is still trying to find a job in Jhb (they have been back here for a few months). At this point in time we are looking at Melbourne or Perth, but are willing to settle anywhere as long as we can find work. Mara - I have contacted a few accounting firms but they are of the opinion that I have been out of audit too long (I left the auditing sector in 2008 to take up a job in commerce). We are willing to take jobs at a more junior level (in my case as a audit senior or assistant accountant) but still no luck. But I will continue sending my CV out - hopefully it will land on the right desk at some point!
funtobeaussiechick
Look at smaller towns, usually less people apply . Look at something about 300000 to 600000 residents and go from there http://www.seek.com.au/jobs/in-australia/#dateRange=999&workType=0&industry=&occupation=&graduateSearch=false&salaryFrom=0&salaryTo=999999&salaryType=annual&advertiserID=&advertiserGroup=&keywords=accountant+regional&page=2&displaySuburb=&seoSuburb=&isAreaUnspecified=false&location=&area=&nation=3000&sortMode=KeywordRelevance&searchFrom=quick&searchType=
