Teaching courses that are recognised in Oz

Hi Everyone

We are currently waiting for our Visas to be granted even though we will most likely only be moving to Oz in about 2-3 years time.

I want to study to become an Early Childhood Developmental teacher (pre school). I have two questions regarding this:

1st - Are UNISA'S courses in SA recognised in Oz? I want to study the 1 year Early Childhood Development course and then followed by the Grade R course which is another year.

2nd question: If UNISA is not recognised in Oz which Oz institution will i be able to study through whilst still living in SA?

Thanks so much

Lori

Hi LoriL, welcome to the forum and good luck with the journey that lies ahead. If you intend teaching in Australia you will need to have your qualifications assessed by the education regulatory body in the state you choose to live. In QLD that also requires you to have your skills assessed by AITSL first and then again by Queensland College of Teachers. It's a lengthy and costly process.

One way you may be able to get around it us to study through Monash University in South Africa which is an Australian based uni. Your best bet would be to contact them and first check if they offer what you are looking for and the to check if it will be recognized in Aus.

As far as I know you will need to have either a BPrimEd (4 year degree) or another 3 year degree followed by a 1 year Higher Education Diploma (or whatever the equivalent is for primary school) with a minimum of 45 days teaching prac (that you can prove so get letters) to qualify for a positive assessment as an early childhood educator.

First step is to check the http://www.aitsl.edu.au site and see what the requirements are. Good luck and I hope you find what you are looking for.

Hi LoriL,

I did my initial Primary Education Degree with Rhodes and then my post grad through UNISA. Both were recognised in Australia and I received a positive skills assessment from AITSL a few months ago. I agree with HadEnoughofJuju though, if you know you are going to be teaching in Australia, then try and study through a recognised institution which will save you a lot of admin later on.

Good luck with the rest of the process!
