Heymanse
This has actually been going on for about 10 weeks now - you can read more about it here:http://www.fin24.com/Tech/Companies/Post-Office-on-the-brink-of-collapse-MPs-told-20141015I would not recommend sending any parcels at this point. AFreshStart
It's bigger than one imagines, that article is a week old already, right now it's at a point where SAPO has just asked for a R5-billion bailout. If not they may close their doors in a month. 50% of post offices are already closed in JHB, in Cape Town we get mail, if we lucky, once a week and a week ago I had to collect a parcel from the depot and it was like Fort Knox!I had my driver license and car scanned in under the watchful eye of 2 private security guards with automated firearms and only one in and out of the compound as looting at depots and post offices has sprung up across the country.Businesses are closing left right and center if they rely on the post office for deliveries. I closed my business in time, but had I not I'd be in a serious predicament, As is I'm awaiting a parcels of parts from the USA which I paid Express shipping for, which should take 10-days... 2 months in the parcel hasn't even been scanned in and is sitting in the depot, somewhere and I've written it off to the tune of R2,000.My local post office won't even accept mail, I had to use PostNet to send a letter to JHB from CPT, cost me R99.Eish Edited October 22, 2014 by AFreshStart
SurferMan
Would be funny if not so downright bloody sad. This, SAA, mining, it just goes on and on. Insane demands for increases, looting, service stoppages, man its bad down there. Sorry for you guys who are still in the mix...
Joeemm
Wow!, thanks for the replys, that is unbelievable, this will force business into the PostNet fold with I'm sure an increase in postal service fees and so prices to consumers. How about Amazon, and other internet based international mail order companies, will they even deliver to South Africa at all ?In Australia, (and globally I reckon) there's been a marked decrease in requirements for traditional post service (due to email of course, which just makes sense) but OzPost is still delivering a very good parcel delivery service nationally and internationally.I must say, getting the odd old fashioned delivery is still quite a nice surprise, hope it never quite goes away.Hey Surferman, I'm worried how it will all end, when will the masses recognise that they have to build the country themselves, government simply cannot do the job (even if they had the best intentions in the world) the available resources seem to be dwindling by the week.
Mel-B
There is virtually no post office. Use a courier please. I saw pictures of how some of the post office store rooms look and it is disgraceful!! (A friend of mine works there as a SAP specialist.) Tazzn
Trying to be organized this year I ordered a lot of Christmas present early - many off ebay with delivery majority by post... mmm lets just say I don't if anyone is getting Christmas present this year.I heard on the radio yesterday that 60% of workers are back and they expect to take 2 weeks to clear the back log. I am praying this is true but by no means holding my breath
Joeemm
Hope the reports are correct, but I guess we'll have to wait and see.
HadEnoughofJuju
I had to see that just after sending some rather time sensitive documents to South Africa. Looks like I may have to send them again but this time by courier.
Joeemm
I also, sent an very small parcel some months ago and ... it has never arrived, even going to a PO Box which used to be enough to ensure delivery.
