Sunnyskies
Everyone has their preferred choice - all very biased (who wants to admit to being on bad cover!) Guys at the office use a combination of Medibank and Bupa. We still on GU Health (which was our obligtory inpatritriate cover when we moved over) but I find it Xy. When I looked at swapping to a "cheaper" medical I worked out I could swap for a cheaper medical and still pay as much as I do at present but with lower benefits! When you find the perfect medical let me know. I need one that pays for braces, dental, eyes, your own choice of doctor, full hospital, allied health professionals. Just went to check the current cost of Discovery comprehensive, don't feel so bad anymore. Would cost us R7,700 for the 4 of us on Discovery comprehensive, which is more than I pay here! The major differences that I am aware of are: - co-payments at doctors and specialists (because covered by medicare and not private medical - so it doesn't matter where you go) - having to co-pay on PBS medication (again a government thing and not a private medical thing) - major dental about $1800 per person per annum - which doesn't go all the way to cover the cost of a full crown - but you can probably get the crown done cheaper somewhere else. - pleasantly surprised when I got my contact lenses, they were covered, but then I didn't get new glasses. Sunnyskies
We were fully covered on inpatriate cover, but that is because the inpatriate covers are obliged to fully cover you - part of your undertaking to the government when you are on a 457. You aren't entitled to the same cover when you have PR because you have access to Medicare - sorry about that but I don't think you will get that gap covered. Mara
I have been with HCF but I only have 100% hospitalisation. If you go to one of the hospitals with whom they have agreements, and there are plenty, then there is no payment. We pay $248 per month for both hubby and I. On my last hospital stay, the charge was $75000, they paid it all. One of my doctors later told me that they thought that Medibank Private is the best fund but I have not looked into it.
Mel-B
Interesting thread! Will be taking down your recommendations and looking into this
JackieO
We are with Bupa Ultimate. Line for line they beat Medibank Privates Top Plan. The only area where Medibanks top cover is better is that they recently intrduced a benefit - they will cover the facility fee at a private hospital emergency room. Tiermelk
Medicare Private Hi Mara, did you mean Medibank? We (PR) are also in the market for something but have not been able to make a decision. I do believe the best medical cover is what doctors believe is the best (makes quick and easy payments to doctors). If you want extra`s cover www.ahm.com.au (owned by Medibank) seems to be a good option as the extra`s limit is over all and not per item. So you could spend all your extra cover on dental if you liked.
