Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I am currently working in mining but I am considering changing careers and was thinking of getting into the real estate business, as it has always been a interest of mine. Any real estate people on here that can give me advise of where to start or what I need or who has done it in south Africa and what was needed to continue doing it here. Thank you any advise will be appreciated.

Thank you very much!!

Alida

In the NT your company/you will need to apply for a real estate license. Your application will be put in the newspaper, so if anyone has any objections they can let it be known. Certificate Iv in Real Estate is normally required with on the job training. Not sure if all States work the same, the laws and by-laws can vary between all the States and Territories. I'm in Body Corporate Management. Property Management can be difficult at times with odd hours.

Hello Shannonc4,

Why do you say that can you tell me a little bit more please? Where are you working in real estate?

I'm currently at Century 21, I'm not in sales but have a fair idea of how things work. It's not a typical 9 to 5 job, it is time consuming and tiring. I love what I'm doing, it's fast paced and keeps me busy but it is also keeping me at work till 8/9 at night.

I cannot speak for all offices, though, in my opinion we are short staffed.

Thank you shannonc4,

I am currently working in mining and want to get out of if desperately, so I am use to long hours and weird shifts, just want a job where I can be home every night and live a normal life where I can have friends and do things with people. Thank you for the advice, will be looking at what sort of courses I need etc.

Hi,

It depends on which area of real estate you'd like to get into - there are many different ways you can go. Do you have an idea what you are looking at, ie, residential or commercial, sales, leasing or property management, or even facilities?

Each state has it's own Real Estate institute/organisation and you can usually obtain the relevant license through them. The VIC one can either be done in 6 months part time or 5 days intensive plus assessments. If you google "real estate license" and the state you are in, you will find the relevant course and providers.

Residential Property Management is probably the least glamorous and most thankless. Tenants are generally just horrible people and landlords aren't much better :)

In Commercial Property, there are a number of different things you can do, and you can have a rewarding career.

What do you do in mining? This may also help determine where you could slot in. There could be a chance of transferring some skills there to an operations/FM type role if you have a trade background.

(Also, which state are you in? City or town?)

Hi Hansa,

Thank you for the great information, not sure if any of my current skills will be helpful at all, I am a geologist. So my plan is to just start all over and therefore looking into all the different options. I have always been interested in real estate and what the property markets are doing so that is why I am looking into changing career and start over doing something completely different. I just really need to get out of FIFO and live and work a "normal" life and job.

I am currently living in Townsville, Queensland, but am not scared to move - lived in Tasmania and WA already!!

So any information is helpful at the moment as I don't know anybody in this field.

Thank you very much!!
