Why is it so quiet in Adelaide?

Was just wondering why the Adelaide folks are so quiet with very few posts? I am starving for some news from that side since this will probably be our home town within the next month and a half...

Our house is about sold (just waiting for purchaser's house's bidder to come up with bond approval...) and bought our flight tickets. At the time of booking the flights it looked like our house would not sell in time so we purchased return tickets (we have to activate visas before 9 December). Anyway, now we have booked the shipping company to pack us up and wife and kids will remain in Adelaide while I return to work my month's notice and wrap up finances.

This past Satursday morning we had an armed robbery on my property. The guy managed to climb through my tenants window (I am renting out a flat on my property), woke them up with a gun pointed at their heads and torch shining in their eyes. The were tied up, covered with a blanket and their flat was cleared of all valuables and the guys rode off with their car. The same guys tried to enter my house earlier in the week but the alarm went off and they took off. Needless to say that I dont sleep well and dont want to spend extra money on security because of the house sale.

I've had two Skype interviews already for work at some City Councils. The first interview went very well but they decided on a local person, however they went so far as to recommend me the another city and I was invited for an interview again. The second interview did not go too well as my heart was not quite into the second application, being emotionaly drained from all the stress related to the move...

Adelaide seems to offer everyting we want in terms of lifestyle offerings: I am a keen mountainbiker and there seems to be numerous trails; love my wine so the proximity of good vineyards is rather apealing, I am a big foodie so all the produce, quality of ingredients, fish, the different markets get me very excited...

My biggest fear however is landing a job that side. It is surely a step of faith. I supose I am just posting, hoping to get some assurance that everything will be all right...

Adelaide is the best! I lived in Sydney for a few years and my family live there now but I had to come to South Australia for my Regional Sponsored visa. I knew nobody and had never even been there.

I love it and got my Permanent Residency on Monday after 4 attempts and a 14 year wait!!! I will be staying here. Everything is within a 20 min drive: beach, CBD, Hills, Vineyards. And there is much less traffic and free parking in most places.

The work situation is not great, I will be honest. Not many jobs compared to Sydney or Melbourne. But the cost of living is lower than in Sydney and it really is quite laid back.

I hope you love it as much as I do. But I'm sure you will. Good luck x

Interesting point there, Rhino1. Maybe they're all out there mountain biking in the hills or tasting wine :) . We really dream of living in Adelaide too. So sorry to hear of the misfortune you had so close to your take-off date ! Not a pleasant goodbye, hey. Now just for the job there ...

Sorry to hear about your ordeal!

Adelaide is a great place...like you mentioned before, close to the wineries! We have beautiful parks, great markets and lovely beaches! We even use public transport, we enjoy going on the tram, which we never thought of doing in SA! Our family loves it here! We arrived in December 2011 and have never looked back.

Employment opportunities is less here compared to Sydney and Melbourne, but you have a better chance of being employed once you are here. Make a list of the companies you wish to work for and sort your résumé to be able to take it to them by hand upon your arrival. That approach worked for my husband (boilermaker) as he is still employed by the same company since our arrival!

Everything of the best for the last few weeks before your departure, you are in for a whole new world when you arrive in Adelaide! Feel free to contact me should you need anything...transport from the airport, advice on suburbs etc., I enjoy helping others as we were once strangers to Adelaide, but call it our home now!

Thank you Opportunities, we are fortunate to have family in Adelaide but we should make a point to meet up once we are there so we can get some local perspective. This is so daunting...

We are flying out to Adelaide on 30 October NEXT week, my heart races everytime I think about it. We are excited, but we will be more at rest when my husband finds a job.

Anybody know of a company in need of an electronic instruments technician? FIFO jobs in mine also welcome!?!

So sorry to hear about the ordeal Rhino1.

I wish you both well and speedy job hunting in Adelaide. I'm feeling positive about Adelaide. Hubby though is really worried about jobs (mechanical engineer).

We're hoping to arrive end of December.

Keep me posted would love to know how you are all doing when you arrive? Most just seem to vanish, it always leaves me wondering if they had to move states.

All the best

I fly out next week tuesday (28th). I have been to Adelaide 3 times so it was a no brainer when it came to choosing a city to settle in, love it there. Also in bit of a job situation, being an electrical technician I need to first go to tech and do the regs, then apply for an Australian recognised trade certificate. Only after that can I get an A licence and apply for jobs. Nerve wracking but exciting times.

@ nicknel - www.seek.com.au is a great place to start looking. Also send CV's to the agents advertising the technical jobs on there so even if nothing is available at the moment they have your husbands CV on file for when the right job does pop up.

We're hoping to arrive end of December.

You do know that December and January are the worst times to arrive job wise? Most people take holidays then and very few recruitment decisions happen then. Also a drop in adverts. It all starts happening again in February.

I know it's a lousy time but I want the kids to start school 27 Jan. Need enough time to secure rental and get kids settled. That's my first priority.

Okay. Just wanted to give you the heads up in case you didn't know how quiet it will be job wise. Looks like you've done your homework :)

Wonderful to see so many Adelaideans-to-be !! Hubby has applied for his dream job in Adelaide, so we're praying and waiting ... God willing, we'll be joining the crowd there not too long from now !! Till then, we'll be tanning in semi-equatorian sunshine on the shore of Bargara, QLD as from 14th of November !

May you all be blessed and prosperous in your move to and stay in Adelaide, we'd be so exited if we would be allowed to join you !
