Mithkage
Hi,I have just arrived in Melbourne three weeks ago (and loving it) and I am looking for an Electrical Engineering job and advice in the building services industry. Thus far I have improved my CV to the Australian Style along with my LinkedIn profile, applied to a couple of positions on Seek.com.au and I have also created a profile on livehire.me (thanks to a similar post). I have begun networking to help facilitate the process. I have also started looking at companies and I have sent out one expression of interest thus far.Any information on growing engineering consultancy companies in Victoria would be much welcome, as well as any further web sites with relevant information or job postings. I would also appreciate any information on courses - maybe for the Building Codes of Australia or on the AS/NZS 3000:2007 standard. Thanks for any help. RYLC
Join some relevant groups on LinkedIn and comment on articles / join discussions so that your name keeps popping up on people's feeds. Also join/like (don't know the term) the business page of any companies on there that you would like to work for. Also make sure that your profile says "looking for new opportunities" (search the linkedin help to find this setting).Get in touch with the Engineering association (can't remember their name) and attend all their events too. Also any sub groups specific to your branch of engineering. A long time ago when we first arrived in Australia my husband organised meetings with engineering firms to "talk about what projects were on the go" and what advice they may have rather than to ask for a job. Oh also keep an eye on the tenders advertisements (newspaper and government website - Google is your friend ) to see what might be coming up. Then your covering letter could say something about wondering if they have vacancies if they are tendering for xyz.The engineering association will be able to help with relevant building codes. ottg
You may also try the companies with jobs in the Defense Industry. They are busy with major submarine specifications and procurement. Also target individuals within the local Linkedin groups who are working for companies that are of interest to you. Over a few coffees ask what projects they are working on (names), their challenges, who are the decision makers and their contact details. See if you can identify a niche where you can strongly contribute. Attempt to make contact with those decision makers and with permission use your coffee-mate as a reference (after 6 coffee-chats you should have some rapport).
