Seeking Advice from Carpenters/Shopfitters/Joiners who have successfully made it to Auz

:D We are looking for some advice from any Carpenters who have successfully made it to Auz please. :yourock:

We have started the process for my husband and I (along with our 11 month old baby) to move over to Auz. He has been a carpenter for approx 15 years (from kitchens, BICs and furniture to decks, pergolas, balustrades, screens etc) We own our own business here in SA doing some high-end projects in some magnificent 5-star estates here and we want to relocate to Auz with the aim of my husband getting a full time job over there in his trade/similar. (He not only physically builds himself, but he meets with clients, builders and architects, can generate cutting lists from architectural plans, does all the pricing and quoting and sources the timber etc so he is 100% involved from start to finish)

Could you please advise what Trade Certificates he would need to get and anything else he would specifically need to have/do to increase his chances and make him more "employable" over in Auz? (Is a certificate in Carpentry/Joinery from CETA sufficient?)

Also, what VISA would you suggest he apply for? (Once we make the move, the aim is to settle there for good, no coming back)

Are there a lot of job opportunities for his field over in Auz currently? If so, in what areas?

And is there any other important or relevant info from your personal experiences that you could share to assist us with this process please?

Thanking you in advance so very much! Any and all info would be a great help. :D:blink:

I have attached a few pics of some work he has done to show what type of carpentry work he would be looking for. hope that is ok

Hey Nini I love his work! I don't know of other carpenters etc on the forum who will know about licensing, but I have 2 ideas for you. One is to keep a close eye on Seek.com.au & the other is to read a lot (and maybe join) Whirlpool forum. This is a hive of info for all things Aussie & I often google 'Whirlpool whatever' and read other people's threads and get ideas. It can save you overpaying for things or under-quoting for jobs, all sorts. There seem to be lots of tradies on there sharing info. Good luck with everything :)

A carpenter (chippie) in Australia is different to one in ZA. Most (chippies) here build houses. Their main function is putting up the stud walls before the gyprock goes on and the roof trusses. Later they also hang the doors and levers and place the skirting and cornices.

They also do a lot of form work for concrete pouring on bigger industrial or commercial builds.

These guys are skilled and must be registered.

Kitchens and cupboards are done by cabinet makers or kitchen companies. No registration required.

An employed chippie might earn about $50 per hour.

Check the Master Builders web sites where you can find out about registration.

I'm not an expert but there seems to be a fair amount work for Tradesmen in Australia - mostly in the building Industry

Training

https://training.gov.au/Training/Details/CPC32011

www.seek.com.au - you can track the job requirements and the areas that have the most demand, good luck.
