Hi. I might have a possible sponsorship for a job in Roma Qld. Does anybody know what the town is like?

Last town before you enter The Outback, so it's quite remote.

We saw that as well. In 2 minds about it on the one hand we can get to Oz quicker but not sure if we want to live so far away.

Taylor1980,

My view is get into Aud, get out of Africa, if you get a shot at goals in th bush, take it. Your kids have no chance in SA.

Just found out I have a skype interview on Tuesday. The company is looking to pay between $75 000 - $85 000. The rental property looks a bit high in Roma, would we be able to survive on 1 salary. It will only be my wife and I and our daughter that is 6.

Yes you should be able to survive on that income, what type of job are you doing there? Are you going to be on the mines? Some youngsters are doing fly in fly out and are earning over $100 000 - I would be inclined to push for the $85 000 rather than accept the $75 000 but you would survive on the $75 000 - can you try and get them to pay your accomodation?

Hi. The job is for an accountant at a public practise in Roma.

Thanks for the feedback.

Hi Taylor1980

We lived in an extremely remote town in WA when we first came over. My husband's salary was around $74 000 and our rent was $710.....we survived and managed to save. One bonus with living remote, you don't have much to spend your money on!

Hopefully your wife will get a job soon after landing - that will certainly help.

Good luck.

Meth abuse is not only a rural phenomenon, nor only an Australian one. After all, Tik abuse in the Western Cape has been around for as long as I can remember.

There is a very interesting article http://www.thesaturdaypaper.com.au/news/society/2014/08/02/life-crystal-meth-addict/1406901600#.VETmafmSx8E. Kind of shocking but eye-opening reading (warning: not for the faint hearted).

When we were thinking of moving to Australia, one of my biggest worries were the statements "everyone uses drugs in Australia". We have lived here 6 years now and I don't see/hear about the same level of drug abuse as I did in South Africa. Not to say that it isn't there, it is. Be aware. Unfortunately the social welfare system in Australia doesn't help the situation, not that you need social welfare to be an abuser.

I think that chzaau raises a valid point, but not an all consuming one.

What do we do about it? We don't use drugs and we ensure that as our children get older we don't treat discussions about drugs as taboo subjects. I wouldn't be unduly freaked out about Roma as a drug haven, from what I read Rustenburg has its own issues with Nigerian drug lords!

My brother lived and worked near Roma for a while, he loved the area and the town. Most of the doctors there are South Africans and there are quite a few South Africans there. The salary is fine. It is a nice start.

I did the second interview this morning and it went great, even got to do it in Afrikaans which was surreal. Now to wait and see if they are willing to sponsor me.

Got the offer from the company today $65 000 with super. They are also talking about my salary sacrifice rent meaning I pay less tax not sure how that works. Just scared that the salary wont be enough to live on.

OK, don't understand the 'with super' part, but 65k is 10-20k lower than the initial possible offer. Will this influence your decision ? It might be good to do a check on living costs. Generally, it's cheaper living in smaller towns, so maybe not so bad at all.

Salary sacrificing is great - I had my rent salary sacrificed in my last job and it's a huge savings.

You need to remember that this job could just be a stepping stone - you don't have to stay at it forever. Your wife working will make a difference too.

I would say go for it - you may have to tough it out for a while, but it will be worth it.
