We used Baileys, who use Kent on this side, they were both great. One thing got broken but we could fix it.

If you are in Gauteng then I would use Bayleys. We used them and were very happy with their service.

Depending on how much stuff you're shipping (we only had boxes, not containers) we used Seven Seas twice and found them excellent from end to end.

In terms of your stuff, my opinion is - good stuff is expensive in Aus, so if you have good furniture, it may be more cost effective to bring it than replace it.

Cheap and nasty is relatively easy and cheap to buy.

But then don't expect it to last long...

Stay away from stuttaford van lines, things got broken and stolen and even with the most expensive insurance with them, they didn't replace or fix one thing. We just left it eventually because I decided to make a clean break.

Thank you, our stuff is pretty old so i am thinking it may not be worth to taking it with and just do the fews boxes route.

Hi Claire, we will be making use of Crown, had very good service so far. And a couple of people we know used them to Aus, so they are highly recommended.

We also thought of replacing everything there, but geez, buying 3 good quality beds over there is almost half of what the whole relocation will cost.

Strange question....i have been told that SA Fridges are too high and that alot of the kitchens in Aus have built in cupboards above the fridges so end up having to buy one when they get there. Has anyone else had this problem?

The story with the fridges can be true. A lot of homes do have cupboards above their fridge space, however, this varies from house to house. If you are bringing your household goods and your fridge is fairly new, then I would bring it. You could always stand it in the dining room or laundry, depending on which is the nearest to the kitchen. If that really ends up irritating you then you could stand it in the garage and use it as a spare, then buy a new one that will fit in the space.

probably a bigger risk that your fridge will be too wide if you have a double door. Getting your fridge to fit is a bit hit or miss in a rental, and we were really lucky that our rentals came with fridges. When we bought our house and our fridge we landed up having to take out the cupboard above it, not because the fridge was too high, but because the fridge was 1cm too wide for the gap (turns out Harvey Norman can't measure or don't know how to measure a fridge).

Haha yes, it seems that way. Do you think i should just bring the big stuff i.e. fridge, washing machine, couches, dining room table and picture frames and the rest of the stuff buy there. I see ikea is pretty reasonable when buy kitchen ware etc.

Hi, here is a list of a few companies that we approached for quotes. We will be relocating to Sydney. We were quoted on 8.5m3 by everyone. So will be using a groupage container and will not take up too much space. Here is the list with quoted values if interested.

ExecuMove - R24,281

Magna Thomson - R24,778

Frasers - ±R25,000

Crown - R25,350

Pickfords - R25,508

Cargopak - R30,450 (they quoted me on 9m3).

Stuttafords - ±R33,000

I think the only other major companies I am missing include Bayleys and Biddulphs.

We have not committed yet (received the quotes last Friday and Monday), however we are probably going with ExecuMove as they gave us the best price and had the best response time when it came to quotes and queries. Have not read about any bad experiences with other customers so they seem to offer a quality service. Speak to Liesl Geeringh - 011 708 7287.

We are not taking too much, just a few larger furniture stuff and smaller things. Here is a list:

1 Queen Bed

1 Small fridge (about 1.5m high)

1 couch (2 seater)

2 tub chairs

4 dining room chairs (we decided to leave the table as it takes up too much space and my wife is eyeing an IKEA table :angry2: )

2 ottomans

1 wallclock

1 large mirror

6 boxes

1 coffee table

1 kist

1 painting

Thats about that. I hope this info will help you in some way or the other.

Good luck with the move - I know it is heeectic and stressful but this too shall pass.

Thanks so much, we are going to stick to the larger stuff too and buy everything from Ikea. Yip it is very stressful and looking forward to the part when we can start settling again :))

Good luck to you guys too :(

Sorry that was meant to be a smiley face not a sad face :)

We used Execumove, Johannesburg to Melbourne, whole process was seamless and quicker than we thought, so I can recommend them.

You don't want the stress of having to figure out where to buy what from and what you want, you'll have enough to do when you arrive, and you should really wait for a sale before you buy too, so you might be without things for a while.

We were happy with our decision to bring our stuff over, and it gives a piece of our "other life" which is also nice.

Just my opinion :)

Just make sure who they use on the Australian side. If it is OceanSky, don't use them! Extremely rude and we ended up paying extras, I just wanted to go back after our encounter with them.

I just got 2 quotations from Execumove and Bayleys for our upcoming move from jhb To melbourne.. Both are pretty similar except Execumove ask you to budget for quarantine as opposed to bayleys which is included in the price. If both quotes are pretty much on par, which would you go for?

I would go for the all inclusive, only because i would hate to be burdened with more costs on that side. We have decided to sell up and start fresh when we are there. When do you plan on moving, we are going towards the end of December - mid Jan.

Hi ccsn,

Fair point there! I am just getting some more clarity with respect to the crating of some items, as these can become hidden costs.

My hubby is going the beginning of March and myself and baby the end of March/early April. It's so expensive to replace everything in Aus (from our research) and we just wanted a sense of "home" while we are settling in, so we have decided to take all of our furniture etc.

Yes it is expensive, our stuff was old anyway and we would probably want to buy new stuff in a year or so so thats why we decided to leave it. We will slowly build ourselves up again. Ikea is pretty reasonable and i am sure there will be sales on after christmas. Its a tough decision to make because you we are trying to save as much on costs as we can.
