Medicals

Can anyone please share what exactly men, women & children can expect when you have a medical done. What specifically do they look at / for? I'm quite phobic of doctors scratching around and if possible, I would like to prepare myself as best as I can for the medical

Please excuse me if this question has been asked often but I was unable to find any topics on the forum.

It was a fairly painless procedure when I went in May this year. They press on various parts of your abdomen. They ask a few questions. They take a blood sample (I hate needles but told the DR this and I barely felt a thing). You have to give a urine sample. Um, what else.... I think they look in your mouth. It is not a very involved process. I thought it would take a lot longer and there would be more poking and prodding. The x-ray literally took a minute.

Good luck.

For my wife and I - took blood and urine, xray ... I think he looked in our ears lol! Nothing stressful.

I have 3yr old twin boys and a 6yr old boy and the 6yr old gave a urine sample but not the 3yr olds. Dr then gave them a general examination - looked in ears, mouth, poked them in the abdomen, nothing serious. The whole thing did take longer than we thought so when we went for x-rays the boys were going a bit crazy in the hospital so make sure you have lunch for the kids it could take longer than you think. Good luck.

I think what they are looking for is any condition/ailment that is going to cost the Aussie (we are going to Oz) government to treat you when you are there where they would rather be treating an Aussie citizen. If you have a condition that will require ongoing treatment and are thus delaying one of their own from being treated - hope that makes sense!

@Chantalgr, just note that while the examination is not invasive you may be requested to strip down to your undies or perhaps wear one of those flimsy examination gowns. If you are doing a family booking, you may not necessarily have any privacy. All depends on the doctor.

Panel Doctors may offer women a breast exam if there is a family history, or clinically indicated, or if you are over 40.

My feedback is that different doctors can be quite variable.

Wow, I am definitely not going to be examined in front of my 8 year old son. I hope I don't get a doctor like that, or if so my husband should be able to take him and step out of the room till I'm done.

More specifically as it seems to differ from doctor to doctor, as far as I know, in Cape Town you have 2 places you can have medicals done. 1 is the Christiaan Barnaard Netcare hospital in The CBD and the other is Intercare Tygervalley Centre. I was thinking about going to the Intercare Tygervalley Centre.

We had ours done at Intecare Tygervalley - was quicker to get an appointment there. Hubby, me and then 7 year old triplets.

We spent about three hours there. Only hubby and I needed to have a HIV test and x-rays done and blood pressure taken. All of us needed to give a urine sample. We also had a basic eye test done and then the doctor examined us all. She had the kids all lined up in a row and had a little "ccompetition" going between the three of them. They loved it! Then she examined hubby - I did a toilet run at this stage and she asked him if he was comfortable to continue or if he wanted another adult in the room. She closed the curtains around the bed. She had lots of toys in the room so the kids were occupied with that when she examined me. It's a basic check up. No need to undress or anything.

Thank you all for taking the time to share your experiences with me. I truly appreciate it :)

@ Beverleyjh, can you perhaps remember the name of the doctor you had at Intercare Tygervalley?

Thanks for the post Chantalgr.. Me and my wife was just having a discussion about this, and she asked the same question. So I said let's check in with our new best friend...SAAustralia.org. This forum is helping us with a lot of questions and answers. Thanks for all the responses.

Our Medicals are coming up in a few weeks.
