So, you moved, settled, unpacked. Got settled at work, time went by, and you started planning your first real holiday since arriving in Oz and earning $$. Where did you go?

We love road trips. Drove Adelaide - Melbourne - Sydney and back to Adelaide through the outback. 12 day round trip. We made no prior bookings. Stopped where we felt like.

Depending on your budget, check out Bali, Thailand, Vanuatu, Disney in Hong Kong, etc. If you want to experience something special on Aus soil, check out Hamilton Island. You can rent a apartment and have Coles deliver your shopping for the week before you arrive. Buying groceries there is quite expensive, but the place is a little bit of paradise.

First holiday was NSW South Coast (Tathra) - it was great. Second holiday was Tazzie in a motor home, friends from Sydney joined us and we were a cavalcade of 3 motor homes stopping wherever. It was fantastic.

Did you rent a motor home?

What did it cost?

Could you drive it on normal licence?

Yes, we each rented one

Yes, you can drive on normal licence

Cost, few years ago now, but there were lots of options and prices. You can take a smaller one or one that isn't quite as kitted out.

Loving the sound of the houseboat. Currently on the list is Uluru, New Zealand and Tasmania. In New Zealand, in addition to everything else want to see the hobbit town from The Lord of the Rings movies. In Tasmania is a town called "Nowhere Else" - that has got to rank as a "must see".

Our first holiday after arriving in Aus was.... South Africa (5 weeks). 6 months after that we went to Fiji and 6 months after that we went to Forster NSW for Christmas. Another 9 months later and we went for our second trip to Fiji. Then my mom and then my sister came to visit us over Christmas 2012 and 2013. We recently did a 10 day roadtrip through country and outback NSW (from Sydney to Orange, Dubbo, Cobar, Broken Hill, Silverton, Mildura, Balranald, Wagga Wagga and Lake Tabourie. We mostly stayed over in Motor Inns and the kids enjoyed having to share a room with mum and dad (taking into consideration that my kids are aged 22 and 18 respectively, that was quite an achievement). We stayed overnight at the Dubbo Western Plain Zoo in the tents - such a nice experience and something that I wouldn't mind to do again.

This is a trip we are currently planning. Four couples. Adelaide to Melbourne (via Great Ocean road). Then over by boat to Tasmania. five to seven days in Tassie. Back the same route to Adelaide. On motor cycles (3 tourers and 1 cruiser).

Mana Island is great! Islands are better than mainland.

Can't remember the order of things but we had a week long holiday with my inlaws in Lorne (Great Ocean Rd. - was great, just like South African beach holidays yet so close to home), weekends away in Apollo Bay, Ballarat (interesting Sovereign Hill), Melbourne (even though I live in Melbourne, it's great to stay over in a nice hotel and explore the city) and beautiful Bright and exotic and colourful Bali.

Soon we are off to Brisbane and the Gold Coast as hubby is working there so we're joining him.

Would love to explore Tasmania and Nieu Zealand.

I see you have also found our little piece of paradise. We just couldn't resist it and had to go back a second time. It's been 2 years since we've been, and we're already suffering from withdrawals symptoms. Just HAVE to go back, hopefully soon.

  • 2 weeks later...

Great to hear of all the awesome trips to make...nearly 8 months in and we have done Snowy Mountains and over a couple of weekends, we have visited a number of little towns along the The Great Pacific Highway drive such as Kiama (my hubby's fave) and Kangaroo Valley (my fave).

Planning to head to Melboune and Tazzie with the parents when they come out for Christmas :)
