Private vs State Schools in Gold Coast

It looks as though we are headed to the Gold Coast 1 November 2014. One of my biggest priorities is to get my kids into good schools for 2015 and I have heard mixed reports about state schools: Some say drugs are a real problem (and general bad behaviour, disrespect for teachers etc). While I am sure this is not the case of every school, does anyone have recommendations of good state schools in the Gold Coast?

Many thanks

The gold Coast has a number of areas to it. Can you tell the forum some of the suburbs you are thinking of as this may help to explain which schools are in those areas and what they like.

Picking schools if not here is incredibly difficult, bear in mind that for state schools you will probably have to live in the catchment area, i.e. prove that you have a rental there.

Perhaps do some googling to get an idea of what are considered good/bad schools......http://www.essentialkids.com.au/forums/index.php?/topic/903835-gold-coast-schools-please-help-me-urgently/

Re drugs, some private schools have bigger drug problems than state schools.......you really have to have your ear to the ground to get to know what is what......a quick google showed some issue with drugs at elite schools and that some schools do random drug testing....

Thanks Andrea!

Chzaau, we are considering Robina, Benowa or Varsity Lakes. Heard Varsity College is a good option? What about Benowa State school?

Thanks so much,

Michelle

Looking at the My school website, it indicates Benowa has just shy of 2000 students, about 1/3 go onto university, Naplan results are about average against Australian average.

Varsity college has over 3000 enrolments but caters for all 12 years of schooling. 47% go to university. Naplan results for reading and numeracy at year 9 are above national average. So looks like a better option than Benowa.

Hi Michelle,

When I did research from SA, Varsity was also one of the State Schools which came highly recommended, and a few ex South Africans living here on the GC also recommend them if you want to go State.

We came over end of July, and managed a rental unit in Robina, but luckily it falls in the Varsity College catchment area. Varsity is very strict about the catchment area, so make sure beforehand.

So far we are happy with the school- our son was placed in Year 2 because of his January birthday, coming from Grade 1 in SA. The school is helping him with an extra tutor once a week, for English reading, because he was schooled in Afrikaans in SA.

I love the fact that we get an email once a week from the teacher with news of the past week as well as the program for the following week.

It looks like they have good discipline in the Primary School, we have not been to the Secondary Campus to know how it is there.

If you have any further questions, please contact me, I would be more than willing to try and answer, or find out for you!

Lizelle
