Ericadslv
So, we are all booked to arrive in Canberra early Feb 2015. We will fly to Sydney and spend a few days there with family before going to Canberra. Two questions:1. What is the best and cheapest way for us to get to Canberra?2. As we will arrive with our suitcases and the clothes on our backs, we will need short term furnished accommodation until we find something more permanent and until our container arrives: - Any ideas on where we should look? - How long does it normally take to find something more permanent?Any advice would be greatly appreciated. MyTimeNow
Hi thereI'll be arriving in Canberra in Nov 2014, and I'll probably be booking furnished accommodation using airbnb.com, which seem to have really good options and prices. The Welcome to Canberra team also gave me these links for accommodation - I haven't really checked them out as yet, but you may find it useful:http://www.canberrafurnished.com.auhttp://www.sundown.bestwestern.com.auhttp://www.canberravillage.comhttp://www.dawsons.com.auhttp://www.quickbeds.com.auhttp://www.canberraccommodation.com.auhttp://www.stayz.com.auhttp://www.yha.com.auhttp://www.canberra.gumtree.com.auhttp://www.allhomes.com.auhttp://www.highqualityrooms.com Since Canberra is only about 300km from Sydney, you may consider driving instead of flying. I'm not sure what a rental car would cost, but it may be worth looking into. Good luck on your journey ?On finding something more permanent, I'd leave 2-3 weeks to be safe. Take proof of previous renting / references with you, as well as Aus bank statements so they can see you have money and some references. You'll also generally need a deposit of 4-6weeks rent. Ericadslv
HI Candice,Thank you so much for the info - much appreciated. I will definitely give airbnb a try - will probably need a 2 bedroom place for my big family to squeeze into for a start. The car hire options sounds good too. With regards to references for renting, we have owned our property, so what do we do in that case?Good luck with your move and hope to meet up with all the Canberrans soon. Kurkprop
Hi EricaThe Murrays bus between Sydney and Canberra is very convenient (and cheap). Here is a link:http://www.murrays.com.au/ExpressService.aspxBut if you are bringing young kids, it might be a bit easier just to hire a car and drive.Re rental properties in Canberra - at the moment there is an over supply of rental properties in Canberra so you shouldn't struggle too much to find something within a couple of weeks of your arrival. Have a look at allhomes.com.au to get an idea of what is available.
Ericadslv
Thanks Kurkprop. Will definitely look at the bus option. I believe there's a train as well. I think the kids would love that.
MyTimeNow
Hi ErikaI'm not sure about references if you were a home owner in SA. I've read some other provided a cover letter stating they were owners for x years etc. perhaps also a letter from the bank where you had your loan..... Perhaps there are some others who can offer more advice?
