Hi There Crossingover

Congrats on Visa Grant - This place Rocks and I am constantly walking around with my mouth wide open and eyes blinking.

If you are mooing to Sydney then Hooray !!! What A GORGEOUS city. We spent the weekend in the QVB and at Darling Harbour ( drinks in evening and then at Aquarium on Sunday and then took ferry across to Opera Bar and had drinks at Sunset yesterday was well). Everything just works !!!! Sooooo efficient and sooooo easy to get around.

Okay - your shipment. I can only give you our experience.

We stored our goods for a month with Bayleys before shipping to try and reduce time without here.

Our whole experience up to getting our goods was amazingly fast so just a word of warning - Don't have huge expectations that your shipment will arrive faster than the shippers say. We were told 6 weeks from door to door - Jhb to Syd. It has pretty much been that. The following occurred that frustrated us;

  1. The ship that was collecting our container only loaded in Durban two days later than stated - something about strike in harbour or something of the sort.......
  2. The ship first goes to Mauritius and offloads there onto another ship which brings it to Sydney - All containers ex Jhb to Syd do this. So the first ship you use on a ship tracker app is not necessarily the one that comes to Syd. Also once ships leave coastline they loose updates. BEST to keep harassing your shipping company to give you updates. They get most info.Bayleys were brilliant with this.
  3. Ship due in Sydney on 16th Aug - Container only arrived at Sydney agent warehouse on 21st !!! Took 5 days to get there!!! They can only book quarantine inspection when container is in warehouse.
  4. ALL and I Mean ALL containers from South Africa have been RED FLAGGED by quarantine and they inspect ALL of them - ours was impounded as they found two pine cones (BECAREFUL of Christams decorations that you overlook) and evidence of wood borer in a piece of cane furniture and we had to fumigate the lot ($800 - Ouch).
  5. Takes a day or two to Book fumigation guys then 24-48Hrs to have it done and then have to get fumigation certificate to Quarnatine to allow release document to be issued - ALL takes time.
  6. We got our Clearance this morning (YEEEEHAAAA!!!!) and our delivery is booked for tomorrow.

When you land - and whilst you wait for furniture just a word of advice. Don't hire anything like fridges and couches etc but rather go on eBay and buy these items as you will find them cheaper and then can resale later. Also look for sales at all the different outlets - lots of clearance specials and often a bit of looking around gets you what you want.

All in all it is stressful to say the least but when you sit on a train and arrive at Circular Quay and have an extremely expensive beer (ZAR 80) with you wallet on the table next to you and you phone next to it and you realise that you are in THE most beautiful city in the world and you are safe, THEN it doesn't matter how much the beer costs or how much energy it took to get here, what matters is IT IS ALL WORTH IT !!!

Good Luck and Gods Speed

Hi Crossingover,

Have you decided who you are going to use to move you? We are still getting quotes but need to firm it up very soon. We are also moving to Sydney in December.

Thanks for your advice RangerBob. Will bear all of that in mind as we will also be storing here for a while.

Good luck with everything CrossingOver.

Remember to breathe x

Thanks Jonno.... :)

Jamie, we got 5 quotes all of them much of a muchness really, we have decided to go with Cargopak, they seem to be small, personal and have a great reputation.

We are likely to pack up the end of Nov and leave late December. Hoping for an end of Jan delivery.

But you never do know.
