Mould & Mildew?

Hi Guys,

Our container is being packed and shipped this week, we are getting basic cover but for R3,000 more we can add super cover which adds insurance like sets, electrical and mould & mildew. We don't have many electronic appliances, no sets other that our dining room chairs, but worry about mildew & mould.

Did any of you experience any mould or mildew damage to your belongings? They share in the paperwork that the containers travel through tropical climates and the fluctuations in temperature and humidity can cause mould & mildew, which can damage belongings.

Just wondering if's worth the extra money or them just making an extra buck on the premiums and spreading doom and gloom with the upsell.

Cheers

Matt

we did have a bit of mould, on all our kitchen cutlery, which we just soaked in vinigar. All our stuff was packed and sealed in the summer in Richards Bay, which was very humid also

Ha ha Matt, wait till you get to Sydney, the mould capital of the world. Leather shoes/jackets go mouldy in your wardrobe, so quickly. Be aware of that.

We didn't take any insurance. I figured that if it fell in the sea I couldn't replace the sentimental value anyway. No mould, no damage.

I had a friend who shipped a car from the UK. He didn't take the insurance, the advise was it will only take 6 weeks. Well the container got delaye for 3 months.

You guessed it. The car interior was full of mold.

If I may ask... Which moving company are you using, and what did they quote you? We are in Cape Town as well.

Our container was packed in Pretoria in May, so suffice to say, we didn't have any mildew. Not even our fridge, chest freezer or washing machine had any. It helped of course that I dried and aired them a couple of days before they were loaded.

Eyebrow, we are using Crown Relocation Services. We are only taking 1/2 a 20" container worth of belongings. I can't tell you what it is costing us as my wife's employer is paying for it. They just sent 2 different companies to measure up and quote, they reported directly to the company in Australia and they approved Crown as our designated agent. Anything over 1/2 a container we will need to pay for ourselves and also the extra insurance.

Thanks all for the comments on the mould/mildew, I think it's worth it to pay the extra R3,000 insurance, we have a large amount of bed linen, expensive mattresses etc that could be damaged and would cost a fortune to replace on that side.

Cheers

Matt

Hi Bronwyn,

Nit sure of the total total in that my wife's company is paying for the standard insurance on our goods to the value of R500.000, they offered for us to pay in extra to cover electrical, sets and mould & mildew damage, which is an extra R3,000. We've decided to do it, we have loads of valuable linen, 3 matresses etc and a few electrical goods that would cost 3-4 times to replace that side, so feel it's worth it given the company is paying for the container and basic insurance.

Cheers

Matt

Oh of course Matt, makes sense. Maybe someone else can chip in with a figure if they read this.
