Is The 190 Worth It?

ORC

Recommended Posts

In light of my disappointing (and unfair) IELTS results (scored 7.5 for writing and 9 for everything else), I'm 5 shy of 60 points.

Is it worth applying for a 190 visa or is that a fairly flooded area. My skills are on the SOL for 190.

I'm single, no dependants and don't mind staying 2 years in an area. Are you allowed to live in the city centre?

If it is worth applying for and it is granted, is it compulsory to work in that trade you were let it on, or are you free to work in any industry like with the 189.

Would really appreciate any help and hopefully some positivity in light of the disappointing IELTS results this morning

Hi RCO

Any PR is worth it... if you are single, it makes it a lot easier.

The IELTS is really a problem. I also had to write a couple of times - I had to get an 8 to meet 60, because ACT was the only state that sponsored my occupation....

I suggest perhaps write once more - but prep hard.... I work everyday, for about a month, did a looooooootttt of reading exercises, and I got my 8 on the reading

I scored 7.5 twice, same as you. Give it a shot once more, and if you don't get the required 8, go for state sponsorship.

Just get in - because it is getting tougher and tougher to get into Aus

With the 190 you only have to stay in the sponsoring state for 2 years. You can work in any field you want to once you have the visa and you can live anywhere in the state that sponsors you. As VTF said PR, is PR whichever way you get it.

I wrote IELTS 3 times and kept missing out on those 5 points (did I Mention I am an English teacher?), eventually hubby and I decided to go the 190 route. I honestly just could not stand the thought of doing IELTS again. Anyway, we have now been here for 4 months, on a 190 and could not be happier. It doesn't matter how you get here, just get here.

Try to apply as close to the end of the financial year as possible to aviod quotas being filled in the new year

Thank you all for the responses. I wanted to wait for IELTS and then send in my assessment as I only got all my paperwork together this past week, but what I'm going to do is, send off my assessment, request a remark. If it comes back higher as it's on writing, then I'll go 189 (as the assessment can take a while). If it comes back the same, I'll go 190 as my occupation is listed on all of the states SOLS and they're hiring for it under a 190.

I've recovered from the shock and disappointment from my first IELTS, now to focus, send in my assessment and see where I go from there.

More updates coming soon(ish) :)

I'm prett sure that the IELTS is just a money making scam.

How is it that English speaking people SO often miss their points by 0.5 in one band, and miraculously it's the most subjective band (writing)?

I also wrote it three times. Apparently I can pass CA board exams first time, but I can't pass an English test first time.

RCO,

Get any visa that can get you in here! I also think the IETLS is a legal scam in many ways but thats me. Once you are here, you are free to move around and it's waaaaay easier work wise from inside Aus than from SA. You are single, rock the kazbar!

Hi Shannon. How many points did you have and what was your timeline?

With the SS we applied with 60 points. Have a look at my profile, our whole timeline is there

Hi Everyone,

Well, after 4 years of frustration I can start chipping in.Started my process in 05/2010.Used agents that ditched me end of 2011.They immigrated to the UK.

Then we were passed on to the direct agents in Queensland. The previous agents never forwarded my documents,so we had to start from scratch.I changed jobs to gain more experience and finally got my Vetassess cert in June 2014.

Since Jan 2014 we researched TAS,as my skills were on their list.

Suddenly in July my agents informed me,that I'm on ACT as well now.So now I'm applying for SS 190 visa for ACT. Nerve wrecking to say the least! All the research is crazy. Submitted all the dox over the weekend.Already received an email from a prospective employer!!! Now another cycle of waiting.

All I can say is: I see land!!

Just to throw another spanner in the wheels

You can pay an additional +/- $4000 to get exemption from the IELTS

Hi

On the 190 visa once you have the state sponsorship the invitation to apply follows quickly. In our case it was a week . We applied for the state sponsorship in July 2013(when the new year started), visa on 14 August and it was granted in October 2013.

I stand to be corrected but the 189 visa is about 6 months depending on the backlog.

The payment is is $4885 and is only for secondary applicants over 18 who cannot meet the English threshold. The primary applicant can not use this option.

Hi everyone,

My agents are old Saffers .Been in Australia for more than 15 years. They are so finicky in every detail I supply, but they will not submit anything until all dox are perfect. Sometimes frustrating, but so effective.

They are going to submit my EOL and application at the same time. They always consult an officer of whatever department we are busy with, first before submitting my dox. That way we know what my chances are, what info is still needed and to get the timing right.

They really are their money's worth.

My sister's been in Oz for 5 years now and a citizen. She "reprimanded' an Ausie the other day after he made a comment about immigrants. She told him, that we speak more than one language( Afrikaans,IELTS English and whatever else),paid our dues to become Australians, usually are skilled people and what can the Ausie do?.......no answer

So just hang in there, everything is worth it.

I dont give a rats @ss if they call me a Jimmy Grant (Aussie for immigrant) Im here legally and I am a highly skilled guy who pays a crapload in taxes. Doesnt bother me in the least. In SA the Government and all parties kept telling us we are colonialists and invaders. Whatever. :jester: :jester:

  • 2 weeks later...

Okay an update on what's happening on my end. Since I asked if the 190 was worth it and questioned the poor IELTS marks I have decided on the following.

I received a skilled assessment from my assessment authority in just 10 days (estimated time on the website 12 weeks).

It was positive and together with the 190 SS, I do not have to rewrite IELTS.

I have prepared my CV and will be signing a declaration tomorrow (SA Time) and submitting tomorrow evening (SA Time) for the 190 SS.

2 Questions?

How close does my CV / Resume need to be to an Australian one for the State Sponsorship application? It's very detailed and covers work experience (descending order), education and certifications in detail as requested by them.

Do I need a certified copy of the Positive Assessment since they emailed it to me in a Colour PDF via email or can I just save the attachment, then attach it to the State Sponsorship application?

I'm beginning to become quite excited as I feel like I'm progressing through this journey quicker than I expected and I feel like I've gotten through the first section of it now that my IELTS, Assessment, PCC and EOI are done.
