ArnoW
Hi everyone, quick question...I am busy job hunting and when looking at advertisements on Seek.com (and most others) it seems that MYOB experience / knowledge for accountants (or bookkeepers) is preferrable. I know there is Xero as well but most all the advistisements I see calls for MYOB.I have come to the conculsion that I will have to take a MYOB course if I am to apply for these kind of jobs. But where would be the best place to do it in Melbourne? I have looked on Google but there are so many options at different price ranges! The traning that MYOB provides at their own training centres are so expensive, and each module is only for a day. There is this site which has a reasonable price, and it is online:http://www.australiansmallbusiness.com.au/courses/myob-bookkeeping-training-courses/I have done a bit of playing around on MYOB by myself (thanks Ricky Naicker for the training software!) but I do not feel that it will be enough... I do not feel confident yet, and I would like to have some kind of certification. If I am to find a job in the accounting field (even as bookkeeper) I will have to take matters into own hand an do this training so I can have the MYOB experience on my resume. I jnow I have only been in Melbourne 4 weeks now but I cannot help stressing about finding a job. I do not want to eventually have to go back to SA because the money dries up sometime... I cannot even imagine that. And in SA I will even have worse of a chance finding a job because of the little problem of skin pigmentation... so I will MAKE Australia work out. Mara
When our company moved the administration to New Zealand, I went to Officeworks and bought a "how to" book for them on MYOB, it cost around $80.Honestly if you are an accountant, MYOB is so easy to use, it is almost common sense, my guess is it would be a waste for you to take the beginners expensive course. You would be almost better off to either download a practice model or buy the MYOB Account Right package and play with it to your hearts content. Together with the book above, you will very quickly get to know what you are doing. Trading up to the higher package of MYOB Enterprise is almost a walk in the park.If MYOB is set up correctly to start off with, then it really works itself with very little input from you.Hope this helps!
RYLC
Go to the library and see if you can borrow MYOB for Dummies. Then read through and do the examples. I'll have a look to see if I have any notes here as I did it at Tafe a long time ago now. Also, is the version you were given the one with the Payroll module?Another thought: have you looked at getting yourself certified in Xero. All their training is online and free. Only the certification test costs money. I know it is more niche than MYOB but because it's a newish product job ads don't expect so much experience but really want people with the skills. I searched internet with the keyword Xero and quite a few firms are moving in this direction now and are looking for experienced staff. PM me if you have questions.

PM me if you have questions. Thanks Crisplet! I have reserved the MYOB for Dummies book at the library (should have it by end next week). The educational software tool I have is the MYOB Educational Edition Release v19.6. This includes AccountRight Plus (including Payroll module), AccountRight Enterprise, Asset Manager, AccoountEdge and RetailManager.I will definitely give Xero a go as well! Just one question about Xero: do you need to be a member of some professional body / purchase Xero before you casn get certified? I was not sure when reading on the Xero training website. It says"Training for registered BAS agents, Tax agents, Financial Advisors (ASFL), and Cloud Integrators.Prior to attending the training, please ensure you are an approved Xero Partner and have a Xero login with access to the Xero Partner Edition."Or am I looking at the wrong certification training? RYLC
Use this page to sign up as a partner: https://www.xero.com/au/partners/signup/ Email me with any issues. Advice with MYOB: stick to just learning AccountRight Plus for now. In over 10 years of bookkeeping I have not needed the other versions (except for AR Enterprise which is just a multi user version of AR Plus) Edited August 27, 2014 by Crisplet

Nev
I implement a financial system called "Microsoft Dynamics NAV" (Or just NAV),It is a lot more expensive to implement compared to the MYOB & Xero packages and therefore not quite as common (On the flip side the NAV accounting jobs tend to pay more)If any of the RSA accountants spot a job that has that requirement for NAV I would happily give them free training (I am a Microsoft certified trainer with 14 years experience working with NAV)You would need to be around the Melbourne Area though, pretty sure we can whip up a certificate of some kind for your CV as well once you are trained.
Gerhardk
A friend did the MYOB online course through www.accountingcollege.com.au - so if you are after a certificate this seems inexpensive. All material e-mailed to you.I have only been using Xero for a short while (as a partner) and I cannot see any company that converting to Xero going back to a software package such as MYOB. I know MYOB has cloud option as well, but Xero seems easier and lots of different packages to choose from.I would suggest getting certified in both MYOB and Xero.

RYLC
Arno I just came across a job post that may be of benefithttps://www.odesk.com/o/jobs/job/_~017f7fef4a87fd1fe6/oh and if I was you I wouldn't apply through the odesk website. I would send my cv direct to the company and not mention the ad at all.
