Wow it's pretty sad that Joburg is considered the unfriendliest. Tbh I find that odd, because whenever we go back it's the friendly people I enjoy. But I guess things are changing as we're seeing people become more disillusioned and poorer :( There also seem to be indications in the press that race relations are deteriorating instead of improving.

I suppose it all depends on where you're from, where you go and what you're used to. I found Paris and Germany (Hamburg) to be very unfriendly when I visited last year. Checking in at a hotel in Hamburg they hardly crack a smile and even though check-in time was 3pm and we were an hour early (due to early arrival of our flight) we had to wait until exactly 3pm! I've heard people say that Capetonians are unfriendly but according to this list, it's rated as the 8th most friendly city in the world! I pay absolutely not attention to these so-called surveys, they are typically hogwash at very best.

One of the guys i work with is from France, he had to stop in Joburg on the way to Madigascar and in his words he will never set foot in south africa again, the south africans that he had to deal with were the rudest people he has ever had to deal with and he understands now why i moved.

I do get why tourists ranked joburg as the worst

Johnno,

Did you look at how/why it was rated as the unfriendliest? Firstly it was user driven, submitted data that was collated by Traveler, and it wasn't all about service but how SAFE visitors felt in the country which was why Joburg shot to the top of the list. People didn't feel all that safe walking alone at night, down the streets in the CBD etc, can you blame them? Service delivery was just one small part of it.

I'll be the first to admit Capetonians can be rude, but foreigners for the most part still feel safe walking the streets, beaches, exploring the landmarks etc. It's a hospitable city, even if some of the residents aren't

Cheers

Matt,

I'm not saying I disagree, I'm merely stating that these surveys are not all they're cracked up to be. For example and based on the same survey (hence questions and responses from exact same submitted sample data as the top 10 cities) but looking at the 10 worst performing cities from that same survey. From my own experience and having visited most of those cities (except Nassau and Moscow), I'd say crime is the least of your worries in any of those CBD's (barring Jhb)...yet they rate at the very bottom.

World's unfriendliest cities

10. Nassau, Bahamas

9. Monte Carlo, Monaco

8. Milan, Italy

7. Frankfurt, Germany

6. Beijing

5. Marseille, France

4. Paris

3. Moscow

2. Cannes, France

1. Johannesburg, South Africa

I will say that arriving at ORT, the immigration officers should all do a course in PR and learn to smile, maybe extend a friendly African greeting but then again the Oz immigration officers are also poker faced and very serious!

Johnno,

I think that studies like these are a democratic way of polling and collating this kind of information, better than just taking a single experience from an individual on what they think of a place. As your shared your experience might be different to mine, so the more the merrier to give an overall picture based on tourists to these destinations. Of course there are also loads of factors that come into play, cultural background and bias etc.

Like you I've had the pleasure of traveled to many of them: 6 of the most unfriendly and 5 of the friendliest, and over 90 cities globally and can see why many of them, from my own experience have landed up on those lists, buy again, it's only my experience, which may well differ from yours.

Cheers

Matt

Yep, have to agree, the survey is a good way to get a general consensus on things, has to be done somehow.......

The Immigration Officers in OZ might be serious and stern, but at least they don't have a mouth full of "slap chips" or chappies...
