Aha85
Hi, I am a saffa living in Sydney. I married an aussie and have been here for almost 2 years. I just joined because I wondered if there are any people from SA in Sydney with a similar story...and because I am soooooo homesick!
Rosa1035
Hi Aha, Welcome to the forum! I am fairly new here myself, and (unfortunately) still in SA. Counting the days/weeks/months until we can arrive in Aus. Sorry to hear about the homesickness, that is something that I am anticipating as being a normal part of the settling in process. I think it just takes time. I have a friend in Sydney who has been there almost 6 years. The first few years she was miserable, missed home and family, but had to keep it bottled up as hubby and the kids loved it there. We went to visit her a few months ago, and I asked if she still pined for home, and it was a very definite no! For a real boeremeisie, Aus is now her home, it just took a lot longer for her than for others. Hang in there, it will get better (from everything I've heard - I might need some counselling from you in a year or 2! ) This forum is such a friendly place, and I am sure that you will meet lots of ex-Saffas in Sydney who will probably be able to give you some good advice, and maybe even a glass of vino! Good luck and let us know how you do!xx

I just joined because I wondered if there are any people from SA in Sydney with a similar story...and because I am soooooo homesick!Welcome to the forum! And best of luck with everything. If I may ask Aha and Robyn L - with "homesick"... what do you mean? Is it something specific, or in the broader sense? My wife and I talk about this a lot, and we kind of expect it will happen. You hear of people each coping in their own way. And I'm sure it's different for each person. If you don't mind me asking.. Robyn L
Hi Neels,I miss certain things about South Africa like the area that I grew up in and my friends and family who I have left behind.I've heard that it takes about 3 years of living in a new place before you can call it home. It my case that was definitely true.Fortunately for me, my husband's family is fantastic and they have been so warm and welcoming. When are you coming over Neels?

My new employer wants me there asap, and I hope it to be as early as November.. Let's see.We are also fortunate that we already have family (my side) close to Melbourne and we know a few Saffa's already there. So the landing will not be too hard... LongHaul
Hi everyone, my wife and I have decided to start the tedious process of applying for a visa, still early days as we are waiting for some of the agencies we contacted to get back to us, I assume they must receive hundreds of these types of requests a day.Best of luck to everyone going for it. Mara
Hi Long HaulI suggest you start a new topic in the foyer, to introduce yourself. You will then see everyone coming out of the woodwork to welcome you.
