lets talk weather

Hi guys

I wonder if you can shed some light on the matter?

A lot of people I have spoken to keep telling me that Oz is as hot as hell no matter where you go, on the other hand a couple of guys tell me that some places actually have very similar weather to RSA.

So, my question is, what areas are similar weather/climate wise to RSA? Obviously Google can only tell you so much but I want to hear what you guys have to say.

Thanks

I can comment on the weather south of Perth in Mandurah. It must surely be the most glorious weather you could ever imagine. It rains in winter with temps as low as 8-10C and highs of between 17-20C. In summer, it never rains and temps vary between 23 low - 37C high. For about ten days a year temps are 38+. But for the majority of the year, say 8-9 months, it is extremely predicable being sunny and perfectly clear blue skies. The monotiny of perfect weather drives one a little crazy toward the end of summer, and you start wishing for small cloud. You can plan a picnic for a month in advance and know that it will be just perfect that day. The sun is very harsh and 30 minutes without sunscreen will leave you red and sore in peak summer. So sunscreen and hats is compulsory.

We live a bit over a hundred km inland from Brisbane, rather like Pietermaritzburg to Durban and we have cool to cold winters, we have had a bit of frost this year although every other year we have been here it has been perhaps 2 days. I love it though, have the fires burning etc and feels like I am visiting the Drakensberg. I love it, boots and scarves and a book and a fire, bliss! Spring is glorious, everything bursting into life, stunning gardens full of spring bulbs etc. Summer is hot but not humid here, really quite pleasant and autumn is great because the trees actually lose their leaves and you know winter is coming. After living my whole life in Durban I am really enjoying having four distinct seasons. Of course lots of different types of weather depending where you are!

Australia is a big place. The climate in Darwin is vastly different between Darwin and Hobart, Alice Springs and Sydney.

The best thing to do is use Wiki for each of the cities. Wiki has a table by month showing temp, rainfall and a lot of other climate info, compare it to the city you currently live in.

Here is Brisbane's

When we were about to make the move, we too heard these "generalised" comments from so called "experts".

Oz is not hot as hell where ever you go. This is a huge country and it varies from place to place. We live in Adelaide and whilst it can get hot in summer it is certainly not "hot as hell throughout the year". Adelaide has a Mediterranean type climate with pretty moderate summers (except when we had the heat wave earlier this year, but that is not always the case). Right now we are in winter and it can be very cold and wet but pretty good overall.

We also spend quite a bit of time in Melbourne. I am not a fan of Melbourne weather. Not because it is very hot, but because it is very erratic. But the season are pretty similar to what we had back in RSA. Overall pretty good throughout the year. Nothing unbearable.
