dowsieboi Posted July 27, 2014 Report Share Posted July 27, 2014 Hey all,Am new here so this is my first post So basically I've just been trying to do some research on the different available visas as I'm still not 100% sure I want to start the whole process yet. The 2 I've been looking at are mainly the Skilled Independent (189) and the Family Sponsored Skilled Regional (489).So my current situation is that I'm 25, have a BSc. Honours degree in Comp. Sci & Informatics and almost 3 years working experience. Based on the skilled independent I think I had the required 60 points but what I've been trying to figure out is what is the advantage of family sponsorship? I have an Aunt, Uncle and cousin who have Australian citizenship but all I've been able to find so far is that it gives you an extra 10 points on your application. It also limits your ability to work in other regions for the 1st 2 years and it's not permanent.So I'm wondering if I've missed something? Or is more a case of people will often go for the 189 visa first and fall back to the 489 if they don't have sufficient points? Listen to them, the 189 is the golden ticket (like the one Willy Wonka gave out, rare and sought after) if you have enough points and is definitely the preferred option. IMHO family sponsorship just creates unnecessary stress in an already extremely stressful process for both parties. Based on your age, work experience, qualifications and if you can score 8+ in all four bands for the IELTS then you should be able to score more than just 60 points won't you? Miss out on a few of the points when in comes to "Overseas work experience" and "Australian work Experience". Kind of weird that they don't even take in account my "South African work experience"? Unless that falls under "Overseas work experience"?So looks like the 189 is the way to go I've been trying to plan a LSD to see if I would actually want to go but seems like a bit of a toss up between saving for a trip and between saving for the actual visa and maybe even a migration agent to help >.< Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Went once to Adelaide when I was young but I honestly can't remember anything about it. This is why I was thinking of doing a LSD sometime towards the end of the year. Am struggling a bit to save up for everything since obviously saving up for a LSD would mean I wouldn't saving up for things like a visa.So far I've got a few reasons for wanting to move. I haven't had too much exposure to anywhere outside of South Africa so I'm really keen to try somewhere new The other reasons are probably the more commonly shared ones where there's always a worry within South Africa. Am I going to get mugged at the next robot? How bad is the economy going to get over the next 5 to 10 years? Would I want to raise a family? Because of my age and the fact I'm not married, it seems like a better time than any to be considering these things. In terms of why Australia, well I've got some family there already so that's already 1 point; climate being close to South Africa and it seems like there's a relatively good quality of life there. Other countries I was considering were Canada or maybe New Zealand. America I have mixed feelings about so it's quite my first choice and Europe seems like it might be too much of an adjustment outside of England?I'm still struggling a bit though to come to that final conclusion though of whether I want to go or not. I tend to see emmigration as a bit of a life experience. I just think life's too short to spend in one place.If I were you I'd do a lot of research on job availability and things that suit your interests in Aus. An LSD is not a necessity if you're happy to take a slight risk, but great if you have the spare $$. But Aus is very easy to live in, so I am sure if it's something you are honestly considering then put your money towards the visa... Once you have it you have a year to decide if you come for a LSD or to make the big move. I would get on to the visa ASAP... Rules may change and you may miss out on the opportunity. You are going to find a lot of help on here, everyone is awesome at giving advice (as you've already seen!)Definitely go for the 189. I am also 25 and qualified as a CA last year, also have 3 years work experience. Submitted my EOI with 65 points and received an invite the next week If you have the capital now to invest in the visa then I say do it, even if you're not 100% sure yet. That's what you should view the visa as - an investment. Who wouldn't want the chance to jump ship in SA and head for greener pastures if (when) things start going south?You're looking at spending around R40k in total for the visa if you don't use an argent so I think it's well worth it. Also it is possible to complete the whole process without using an agent and you will find tons of help on here. A LSD trip would probably be an awesome way of deciding whether or not you would like to make the move, although I wouldn't see it as an absolute necessity (some people on here may disagree). My girlfriend and I are planning on making the move early next year to Melbourne and neither of us have been anywhere in Aus before. The decision for us was based on the usual concerns of crime, raising a family here etc. We were also inspired to make a huge change and see more of the world after a lot of traveling around the US and Europe. I think at our age we're fortunate enough to be in a position to make big decisions like this and still have time to change plans if things don't work out as expected!Good luck with the rest of your process and shout if you need anything! We have friends with the exact same situation as us who did use an agent (Migrate2Oz) who are in the same stage of the process as us now (waiting for a CO). So personally I don't think there are huge pros or cons to using an agent. Like you said it's about weighing up the cost vs. the benefit of the added peace of mind.
