origincanada
Hi thereBeen in Aus just over 4 years now and decided to start the journey getting my Aus citizenship. As expected I started filling out the SA paperwork to retain my South African citizenship and come across a few vague questions. It could of course be me being a little slow -On form BI-1664 question 9 where it asks "How to be acquired?" - How does one answer this question???Many thanks for any help.CheersClinton SmithSydneyAustralia
Aneldari
HiIt is exciting times for you!!Migrants with permanent residence who satisfy the eligibility requirements apply for Australian citizenship BY CONFERRAL.That just means you went the PR/waiting 4 years-route. Some people who have Aussie parents will apply for Aus citizenship by descent but you will apply by conferral.Hope that helps.CheersAneldari

21yearsoutofrsa
It is naturalisation.Citizenship by naturalisation is the only citizenship that can be conferred, other citizenship come about by birth. ( unusual exception is citizenship by marriage)It's conferred when you attend the citizenship ceremony and take the oath. The High Commission's website appears to be down and my daughter just signed my son's form so I have to redo the front page. Would love to get it done tonight so that we can mail in the morning. Sunnyskies
Filling in form B1-529 as part of the application to retain South African citizenship. The form relates to the determination of my citizenship status. Once it is determined that my citizenship arose through birth, that I lived there 30something years, I have a South Africa ID number, that I have a South African passport, can't they then make some of the other things that need to be completed "in full" unneccessary - its almost like trying to prove 10 years of employment for DIAC, never ending. I do find it weird that I have to prove my right to South African citizenship in order to determine whether I can keep that citizenship as well as obtain Australian citizenship. It feels like two processes have become bureaucratised and confused.
OubaasDik
... and as I said in another post, there's a tiny document called the constitution that says no-one can take your citizenship away ..... Wonder whether anyone's read it.
Sunnyskies
Nah, that would be too easy.
OubaasDik
Just in case anyone was thinking I was talking about people on this site reading the post - I wasn't I was talking about RSA gov't and minions reading the constitution.Just reread the post and thought "Whoa, dude, someone will take that the wrong way" ..... Sunnyskies
I knew what you meant but that never stopped a high jack of a thread - you could become the victim of your own whit!I've gotten over my irritation now that I have found my parents' ID numbers, marriage date etc, etc and calmly stated why I want to keep my citizenship. Damn, I should have cited the Constitution.
