Ok now that I have a 457 and will be starting work in March how do I go about the PR process? Is there a waiting period or can I just start the process?

The only way you can go from a 457 to PR is for your employer to sponsor you on either the ENS or RSMS programme. Which path do you intend taking?

You can either see if your 457 sponsor will sponsor you for an 856 Employer sponsored visa or go the Independent skills route yourself with a 175 or 176. The ENS 856 ( or 857 RSMS if you are in a regional area) is probable the preferred way as it is a lot quicker than the 175. If you have a valid skills assessment, your sponsor could apply straight away, however, many companies like you to have worked for them for 2 years( and you will need to do so if you are not skills assessed), before offering to do so, partly to see if you fit well and partly to ensure that they get some worth from you (you are free to leave the sponsor and work for anyone once an 856 is granted, but have an obligation to remain with the company for 2 years on an 857)

Your best bet is to get on here Sponsored and skilled workers and have a good read through 175/176 and 856/857 visa types. Feel free to fire away with any questions you have.
