I left a very good LCD monitor (23.6") in SA as I thought that I would find something else here to replace it with. I have family coming over and was wondering how easy (or difficult) it would be to have them bring it. It's quite big so not sure if it will work as hand luggage. ;] It'll probably fit into a large suitcase but am wondering if officials would have a problem with this.
What options and alternatives do I have or what does it cost to check this in separately as fragile luggage?

Maybe contact the airline - people can sometimes bring fragile items in the cabin (e.g. I have seen musical instruments on board).

If it goes via the general baggage it might get lost - we were told a couple of times at luggage check-in at JBurg that if we had anything that looked attractive by x-ray it should not be in our hold baggage or it might vanish on route. If you watch them unloading bags from the plane you will see many just get thrown and dropped a fair distance.
