schoemie
Hi Thanks for the post, I forgot about our prescribe medicine in my budget. This reminded me again. Does the medical insurance cover chronic drugs ?Anton
catz
One can also get a pretty good idea of medicine prices if you look at the following linkhttp://www.chemistdirect.com.au/I been ordering some stuff from them online. I found they are pretty much cheaper than most chemists i have been to. They send it registered post and you normally receive it within 5 days (well i do in Melbourne). Quick and easy delivered to your door!!Caro

Bob
All Australians are covered by Medicare, as well as permanent residents and those coming from countries with reciprocal health agreements with Australia (e.g. U.K., Canada, N.Z., Sweden, etc.)Medicare incorporates the "Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme" (P.B.S.) which lets Aussies get their prescriptions from the chemists at affordable prices. With a prescription signed by a GP, you are able to get a drug for the prescription charge (last time I got a prescription, it was only $23, but that was ages ago and has gone up since then!)You should get the chemist to note the charge down, as there is also a "Safety Net" which totals all your costs for prescriptions up in the year, and once the limit is reached ($750 for all members in one family . . . . don't know about single or couple rates, but would be less, obviously) you and all other family members can obtain prescriptions from the chemist, which are signed by a GP, at no further cost. This allows ALL Australians to be able to obtain prescriptions for their ailments without much penalty.www.medicareaustralia.gov.auclick on the link to the P.B.S. logo on the top right hand of the webpage. This should lead you to all the info needed about the P.B.S. and costs. In the mid 1980s, some international drug companies were putting up their charges to exorbitant rates, so the Australia gov't allowed chemists to stock generic drugs if some patent drugs were too expensive. If you have a patent drug from a particular drug company in Sth Africa, you may only be able to get a generic drug, performing the same action, in Australia, if that particular drug company is selling their drugs on the Australian market too dearly . . . . so . . . be flexible and don't necessarily expect to get "Hippophantus" on the Australian shelves when "Skippyfloo" does the same job, is recommended by the local Australian GP, and is sold by the drug company making the stuff for a quarter of the price to the Australian chemist.A visit to an Australian GP is covered by Medicare. You get 85% rebate back of the scheduled fee for a particular service.A 10 or 20 minute consultation is charged at a certain rate by the GP.He / she may charge the "scheduled fee" rate which is a rate set down by Medicare as fair for the service provided by GPs in Australia for a 10 minute consultation, say.The GP may charge more or less than the Medicare "scheduled fee" and you must pay the "gap" completely yourself. If a 10 minute consultation is scheduled at being $30, then you get back 85% of the scheduled fee ($30) which is $25.50, leaving you to pay the remaining $4.50 yourself for the consultation. If, however, the GP likes to charge more than the scheduled fee (like my GP does ) then you pay the balance yourself between the scheduled fee and his / her charge. My GP charges $40 for a 10 minute consultation, so I get back only 85% of $30 ($25.50) leaving me to pay the remaining 15% ($4.50) and the $10 "gap" between the scheduled fee of $30 and his charge of $40.I therefore end up paying $14.50 for a 10 min consultation, whereas some people find a GP only charging the scheduled fee ($30) for 10 minutes consultation and only end up paying $4.50I'm just not a good businessman . . . but I do like a GP if feel I can trust!
